Images of Love, Loss and Living On

Grief is the internal reaction to death; Mourning is that grief expressed.

Many times people use the terms “ grieving” and “ mourning”  interchangeably. It is important to understand that grief is a noun addressing the thoughts, emotions, and images attributed to the death of a loved one. Mourning is an action word; to mourn is to express those internal reactions through crying, talking about the person, sharing the internal experience, and journaling to name just a few.

Creativity is very beneficial when someone is mourning, providing expression and vision to the internal reactions to what many times can’t be put into words. Some examples of creative arts are painting, drawing, music, writing poetry, and dancing.

One of my favorites is photography. I ask my clients to bring in family pictures to share about their loved one if they are emotionally able. One picture tells a story of connection and when there are many photos, it’s history.

I also love to take pictures, especially in nature where there is so much beauty and peace.  It doesn’t matter whether you’re a professional photographer or have an iPhone or Smartphone, the photographs taken are with intention and purpose, symbolizing your internal thoughts, images, and emotions. Mourning!!

I have an upcoming six week workshop that will take us to 3 different locations in nature to capture our love, loss and hope. Class size is limited so sign up today. The start date is June 13th from 7p to 9p.
