
Kathy Cherven RN, LCPC
Kathy has 41 years experience as a nurse. During that time, she was sensitive to the loss and grief needs of her patients and their families.
She obtained her Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Lewis University and began her counseling career. Kathy has been dedicated to loss and grief counseling for over 10 years.
Kathy can help you with the oftentimes overwhelming and confusing emotions of grief and loss. She is a compassionate counselor, providing a comfortable environment where individuals and families can explore and adjust to their grief experience.

Christopher J. Maier, Ed.D., LPC
In May of 2020, Kathy Cherven Loss & Grief Counseling was pleased to welcome Dr. Christopher J. Maier, Ed.D., LPC to the practice. Prior to joining the practice, Dr. Maier served in the public education system, working his way from being a substitute teacher to district superintendent. During that time, the overall welfare of his students, staff, and community were his priority. That commitment, care, and compassion led Dr. Maier into the psychotherapy field.
Dr. Maier’s formal training and education includes:
- 2002 – Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Eastern Illinois University
- 2007 – Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Governors State University
- 2017 – Doctorate of Educational Leadership and Educational Psychology from Northern Illinois University
- 2018 – Master of Arts in School Business Administration from Northern Illinois University
- 2021 – Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands
- 2021 – Master of Arts in Addictions Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands
Dr. Maier specializes in grief and loss, traumatic death, death by suicide, death by overdose, posttraumatic stress disorder, and palliative care. Within his specialty areas, Dr. Maier sees clients of all ages. Dr. Maier also welcomes children and adolescents with general counseling needs, including depression, anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and behavioral issues. Dr. Maier is also available for speaking engagements and workshops.
Within the therapeutic setting, Dr. Maier utilizes a number of modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness-based therapy, play therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and clinical hypnosis.
